Around The World: Daft Punk in Japan [2000]
When we talk about Electronic Dance Music, it's hard to not talk about one of the most iconic duos in music history - Daft Punk.
The French electronic music formation consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter is widely regarded as one of the most influential acts worldwide.
Bangalter and Homem-Christo founded Daft Punk in 1993, after their time together in the rock band Darlin'. Their debut studio album Homework [1997] which included the hit singles "Around the World" and "Da Funk", received positive reviews throughout. From 1999 the duo established robot personas to preserve their identities. At the same time, they began to make only a few media appearances and give almost no interviews. Up to this day, most people remember Daft Punk as the two Robots, although it only takes two clicks on the www to find pictures of their real faces. The narrative of the robot personas was so strong that it made the rest uninteresting.
In 2000 they made a trip to Japan where they were photographed by Tetsuro Sato while walking through the streets of Tokyo and taking the subway, all dressed up in their Robot outfits. But, as it wasn't before 2001 where these photos were shared of the two in magazines, the public couldn't even know that they were Daft Punk.
There's not much known about this particular trip to Japan, but it probably was to meet with their childhood idol Leiji Matsumoto with whom they created Interstella 5555. The 60-minute Anime-Musical was produced by Japanese animation studio Studio Toei and hit theatres in Japan in 2003. However, outside of Japan Interstella 5555 – The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem was only shown in selected cinemas - mainly in France and the US.
A first glimpse of the film the public got between 2000 and 2001 when the music videos for the singles One More Time, Aerodynamic, Digital Love, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and Something About Us ran on TV. The videos consisted of the first 15 minutes of the upcoming movie.
