How A British Designer Designed Suits to Explore the Universe In | Craig Green for Alien: Covenant

Fashion design has transcended the realms of dressing for the runways or the everyday and has become as much about a narrative with something deeper as it has about vogue’s, textiles, and techniques.

The designers of today are building worlds, and because of this, cross-pollination is continuing to bleed into other sectors; particularly between costume design.

High-profile designers are being tasked to create nuanced fashion for blockbuster films to immerse the viewers even further, and one moment of this that we particularly love of this is when prolific UK designer Craig Green headed up the fits for Aliens: Covenant.

Craig Green has been a buzzword in the fashionscape for some time now, emerging onto the scene in 2012 and quickly captivating an audience through his innovative take on menswear. Continuing to push the boundaries of creativity, from his audacious Moncler collaborations to his mainline in which finds a beautiful balance between studious and enigmatic, it’s on this premise that truly made him a perfect for Ridley Scott's 2017 sci-fi horror flick, Alien: Covenant.

Able to come to life through Scott’s collaborator and renowned costume designer Janty Yates after an unexpected and surprise visit to Green’s studio, this partnership was a match made in heaven with Green being a huge fan of the Alien series. Inspired by Craig Green’s AW15 season, which was particularly utilitarian with workwear-inspired jackets and pants, Yates connected with the UK designer by arriving at his studio after not being able to get in contact with him. The AW15 collection even featured sweaters with holes on the chest, much like the iconic xenomorph exit point from the franchise. A coincidental sign perhaps.

Having accepted the offer, Craig was tasked to design hundreds of outfits for the film. From skintight, elegant tops to full outer space explorative suits, Green's DNA is undeniably distilled into the designs taking direct references from his mainline but also infusing further utilitarian nuances to help contextualise each outfit.
