Konbini Confessions - The Tokyo Chu-Hi Interviews
Konbini Confessions is a new chaotic but brutally honest interview series hosted by rapper Miyachi and photographer Yuri Horie.
The concept is to ask complete strangers wandering the streets of Tokyo some of the most random questions. Miyachi, with a Chu-Hi [Shochu highball, Japanese alcoholic mixed drink] in one hand and a mic in the other, does an amazing job of approaching people and engaging in some of the most awkward content you've seen.
Asking wasted people the meaning of life, asking high school girls if they are rappers, and bowling with empty cans on the streets are just some of the things you never knew you needed. The new format is hilarious to watch as often it’s more the alcohol than the people themselves answering the questions. Pretty much all the footage takes place at night, where you'll find all kinds of people, both good and bad.
As the name already promises Konbinis play an important role in the videos. All of the episodes [six so far] start at one Konbini in a different Tokyo neighbourhood. Often Miyachi switches up the questions and asks about Konbini snacks or beverages. Although KC seems like one huge joke, which isn't wrong, it also sheds some light on Japan's international perception.
The country is typically seen as "polite" and "respectful", but KC reminds us that Japan isn't just a bunch of healthy, nice people after all. Miyachi is a Japanese-American rapper who got famous with his debut album “Wakarimasen.”
The album spans between Tokyo and New York, between East and West and features various styles of beats and sounds. His song "Famima Rap" connected him even more with Konbinis, which is exactly why KC exists today. Yurie Horie is a photographer based in Tokyo and part of Drop Tokyo, a platform focusing on Tokyo street style and the subculture communities.
We are excited to see where Konbini Confessions are going and what philosophic answers are still hidden on the nightly streets of Tokyo.
