Sakamoto Days: Legendary Hitman Turned Loving Husband
Manga about hitmen have been a popular subgenre for many decades. T
he classic "Golgo 13" trilogy [RIP Takao Saito], the crazy "Ichi the Killer" [yes, the movie is based off a manga], and the recent "The Fable" are some of the names that come to mind. It tends to be that although dealing with killers, hitmen manga can be anything from dark and gloomy to happy and comedic. The most recent name that can be added to the hitman-manga list is Sakamoto Days.
Sakamoto Days is a manga written by Yuto Suzuki, which began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in Novemeber 2020. The manga has already won awards, and the voice comics uploaded to YouTube have racked up millions of views in short time.
The manga follows Taro Sakamoto, a chubby man, husband & father, who is now the owner of his own convenience store. His wife and daughter are everything to him, and he is willing to do anything to keep them happy & safe. Literally anything. Like deal with assassins who are trying to kill him.
Taro is in fact an ex-hitman, and not just an average one. He was feared and respected by others in the same field, and had only been injured by one person in the past, X, a killer who hunts assassins. There was just one turning point for Sakamoto's life: falling in love.
Sakamoto fell in love with Aoi, his current wife, and retired from his career as a hitman to marry her. His chubby appearance is a result to him being happy and eating a lot after getting married & having a kid.
Although retired and gaining a few kilos, Sakamoto's hitman senses are still fully intact. Along with Shin, an ex-hitman who looks up to Sakamoto and works at his convenience store, Sakamoto tries to protect his quiet life & loving family from assassins and other obstacles while meeting new allies and enemies along the way.
Sakamoto Days is ongoing, and the story keeps getting better after each chapter. The mix of comedy and action is perfect, and keeps making you turn the pages. The manga is serialized in English as well, go check it out when you get the chance.
