Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi: A 36-Volume Masterpiece
With 36 volumes released since it's debut in 1998, H x H is a legendary manga written by manga legend Yoshihiro Togashi. H x H has reached a status in Japan that few manga's ever achieve.
H x H follows the story of Gon Freecss, a young boy who lives on Whale Island, who was told his parents were dead all his life. When he got attacked by a foxbear, Gon gets saved by Kite, one of Gon's father's apprentices, and is informed that his father, Ging Freecss is still alive. Kite also says that Ging is one of the world's top "Hunters”; licensed & trained members of humanity, who search the world for treasures, beasts, and even people.
Being a Hunter grants you many privileges, such as permission to enter forbidden areas.
Gon, who is extremely curious about his father, decides to leave Whale Island and take the annual Hunter exam to become a Hunter himself, and find out more about his father and the world that he is in.
At the Hunter exam, Gon meets Kurapika, Leorio, and Killua Zoldyck, During the exam, Gon and the rest encounter Hisoka, a mysterious yet deadly magician, who seems to have an almost obsession-like interest in Gon. H x H follows Gon and his friends on their countless journeys together.
Besides its incredible character design and some of the best villains a manga has ever brought up, H x H is famous for the countless hiatuses that author Yoshihiro Togashi goes on. If you count the chapters that have been in Weekly Shonen Jump [Japan's best selling manga magazine], there are roughly 400. Compare that to the roughly 700 times that he has not been in it. To great surprise, the manga is currently on it's longest hiatus yet, at 2.5 years and counting.
