The Next Generation Worker | a sabukaru editorial for côte&ciel
As fashion makes its full-circle metamorphosis, we are starting to see a shift in trends and style.
What was a pair of ultra-wide baggy trousers and GORE-TEX shell jacket is slowly but surely for a particular few becoming a more stripped-back, formal fit. Despite this shift, many are still retaining the essence of functionality that the street scene adopted so heavily and as the younger crowd starts to become young professionals, they infuse fashion-forward nuances into their everyday formal uniform. It’s on this premise that we present to you our latest editorial with côte&ciel, dubbed ‘The Next Generation Worker’.
With the French-born brand being intrinsic to this more sophisticated scene of fashion, having history-making bags fit for the modern professional, their products were the perfect choice to bring this concept to life; with Japan also having one of the most intensive working cultures in the world, where expectations are so high, especially for the younger workers, what was created was a culturally nuanced editorial that lives in the now but pays homage to past and future principles.
The intense Japanese working culture is no hidden secret. The infamous ‘Salaryman’ exists, 7/11’s are stocked with fresh white shirts in case you’ve done an all-nighter in your current one, and a sprawling drinking culture due to being overworked are all realities here in Japan. But the next generation of workers are not picking up their garments from the nearest conbini, but instead carefully curating their style from prolific brands that are supplying them with this new form of formal style.
This shift in aesthetic helps paves the way for some of côte&ciel’s most versatile and elegant styles, including the Sormonne Obsidian, Inn Sleek Nylon, and the Obed Smooth as seen in the images, to become staples amongst both formal environments and urbanity.
